Advantages of a Tool with Swivel Arm
Tools with a swivel arm have a reaction arm with a 360° range of motion. This allows the reaction arm to be brought into the required holding position without disassembly or repositioning of an additional wedge. Once attached, the reaction arm absorbs the reaction forces of the tool.
Both the rundown torque and the joint condition itself can impair the working accuracy of a clutch or an impulse tool. In softer joints, the threshold torque is reached earlier in the fastening cycle, leading to longer rundown times. This proves to be particularly difficult with impulse tools.
With long rundown times, a tool with a swivel arm can stabilize the speed and thus reduce the overall rundown time.
In a typical hard joint with rundown torque, a short-term torque peak occurs which can cause a clutch or an impulse tool to shut off prematurely. With tools featuring speed switching, the speed is also downshifted during such torque peaks and the rundown process is slowed down.
