Cordless assembly tools with torque control by Cleco
Cleco CellClutch™ cordless screwdrivers have torque control and speed control that enable repeatable, precise screwing during assembly. The programming of the tools allows 7 levels. The operator can see directly on the device whether his screw connection was OK (green light) or not OK (red light). The use of batteries eliminates the need for annoying cables or hoses and the batteries can be used for all Cleco battery-powered devices. The Connect devices can also be connected to mPro controllers via WiFi/Bluetooth. A smartphone app is currently in development.

CellClutch Torque Shut-Off Screwdrivers from Cleco: Precision for Industrial Assembly
Cleco CellClutch™ cordless screwdrivers combine electromechanical compactness with mechanical precision. The devices feature torque shut-off and finely adjustable speed control, ensuring that every connection is tightened with reproducible accuracy. Without bothersome cables or compressed air hoses, battery operation reduces tripping and integration risks in manufacturing cells and enables flexible workplace design.
Technical Characteristics and Design
The CellClutch series is based on a robust brushed or brushless motor combined with a high-precision planetary gear or angle gear (depending on the model). The housing typically consists of anodized aluminum or glass-fiber reinforced plastic to ensure low weight with high torsional rigidity. Rolling bearings and hardened worms or gears minimize play and wear. The torque shut-off operates mechanically via a clutch mechanism that triggers at defined torque levels; in some variants, an electronic shut-off supplements the calibration capability for production tests.
Torque Range and Calibration: CellClutch models cover common assembly-relevant ranges from a few N·m to medium torques. The adjustment options are stepless or in defined click-steps and allow adaptation to different types of screw joints. Calibrations are carried out according to industry standards and are traceable, with manufacturer-specific test protocols documenting accuracy over the lifespan.
Drive and Battery Integration: The devices use interchangeable lithium-ion batteries that are compatible with other Cleco battery systems. Battery size and capacity are adapted to the application: smaller cells for light assembly cycles, higher capacities for shift operation. Charging electronics support fast charging and cell balancing to prevent voltage drops under load. The interface between the device and the battery is designed to be lockable to prevent unintentional loosening under load.
Material Compatibility and Joining Technology
In production environments, users encounter different material pairings: aluminum and steel sheets, plastic components, high-strength steels, and hybrid connections. CellClutch screwdrivers are designed to achieve the desired target values without material damage. For soft materials, a reduced final shut-off with lower trigger energy is recommended to avoid plate or thread overstretching. For high-strength screws, the torque profile must consider possible pre-tension and settlements; the CellClutch allows controlled multi-phase operations (pre-tightening with reduced speed, final tightening with defined shut-off).
For applications with sealing elements or sensitive surfaces, drive attachments can be combined with protective sleeves and torque limiters. Ball or O-ring seals on interchangeable inserts ensure particle tightness of the interface when the tool is used in contaminated environments.
Connections, Consumables, and Maintenance
Mechanical connection points focus on standardized square drives or quick-release systems for bits. Electrical interfaces are limited to battery and charging contacts with robust, galvanized contacts against corrosion. Consumables are primarily bits with precisely fitting profiles (PH, TX, Torx, hexagon socket) and must be replaced regularly due to wear. Lubrication points on gear and clutch components are designed to be accessible; for maintenance, Cleco recommends defined service intervals and replacement kits for WORN CLUTCH PARTS to ensure shut-off accuracy.
Maintenance processes include checking shut-off accuracy using torque testing devices, checking bearing noises, and measuring battery capacity. Documented test protocols are mandatory in manufacturing environments to support traceability and quality management systems.
Use Cases and Practical Examples
Practical Example 1: Assembly of aluminum sheet cladding on gearbox housings. A CellClutch cordless screwdriver with a low shut-off setting performs pre-tightening at 2.5 N·m and final tightening at 5.0 N·m. The two-stage procedure prevents bulging and ensures uniform force distribution over the bolt pattern area. Result: reduced rework and consistent joining quality.
Practical Example 2: Series assembly of engine control units with plastic housings. Use of a model with an angled design and soft final shut-off reduces the risk of crack formation on thin webs. A closed protective sleeve on the bit prevents damage to the sealing cord during screwing. Result: increased first-pass rate in leak tests.
Practical Example 3: Assembly of control cabinets in workshop lines. High-capacity batteries are combined with fast-charging stations to enable shift changes without tool changes. The devices are calibrated and integrated into tool management systems, so that each screwdriver is assigned a QR code and test intervals are automatically documented. Result: transparent traceability and reduced downtime.
Integration into Production Lines and Quality Assurance
CellClutch screwdrivers can be coupled with manual stations as well as semi- and fully automatic assembly cells. The reproducible shut-off characteristic is suitable for inline release processes or random sample tests through digital torque logs. For industrial connection, interfaces to data acquisition devices or proprietary MES systems are possible; documented calibration certificates and TRIGGER PROTOCOLS support audit requirements. Further practical application examples for integration can be found under Application Examples and technical information at Technology.
Safety Aspects and Ergonomics
Mechanical shut-off clutches minimize the risk of overtightening, electrical safety shut-offs prevent malfunctions in case of battery failure. Ergonomically shaped handles with anti-slip inserts reduce hand fatigue during series assembly. Stationary holding devices and bit holders with magnets or quick-release chucks improve positioning accuracy for recurring component geometries.
Selection Criteria for Purchasers
When selecting a CellClutch torque shut-off screwdriver, the following parameters are crucial:
- Required torque range and shut-off accuracy, compatible bit holders, battery capacity and charging cycles, calibratability and traceability, housing materials and protection classes, integration capability into data acquisition systems, and maintenance concept.
Make your selection based on component strength, permissible pre-tension force tolerance, and operating times in your production. Check whether the desired model has optional angle gears, protective sleeves, or compatible attachments for special seals.
Scope of Delivery and Options
Standard deliveries usually include the screwdriver, a battery, a charger, spare bits, and a calibration certificate. Optional angle heads, extensions, magnetic holding devices, special plug-on seals, and complete service kits are available. For use in potentially explosive atmospheres, special ATEX-compliant solutions must be checked separately.
FAQs
1. How accurate is the torque shut-off of CellClutch models?
The shut-off accuracy is typically in the range of ±3–10% depending on the selected model and the condition of the clutch; regular calibrations are necessary to maintain this accuracy over the lifespan.
2. Are Cleco batteries compatible with each other and how long do they last in shift operation?
Cleco uses standardized battery platforms; batteries are generally compatible across models. The runtime depends on the load profile and battery capacity: for typical assembly cycles, shift operations can be realized with suitable high-capacity modules, and fast-charging options reduce downtime.
3. What test and maintenance intervals are recommended for the shut-off clutch?
Regular functional checks with a torque testing device are recommended after defined shift or weekly cycles, as well as a complete service including replacement of significant wear parts after predetermined operating hours; exact intervals depend on the frequency of use and manufacturer specifications.
